The Man Who Knew Too Much Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from R. E. Simmons -- This edition is defective! : This Kindle edition is defective. The words are changed from the original version. It’s as though it had been run through a translation program where it was converted into several languages before coming back around to English. The other editions in the Kindle Store are correct. I would like to get my money back but it’s hardly worth going through $50 of headache to get a $2.99 refund. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JZS -- A novel in Eight short stories : Let's face it- you either like late Victorian/early 20th century mysteries or you don't. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. The language is more formal and, in the short stories especially, the mysteries tend to be simpler, less complex than later works. It isn't until later in the era with Sayres , Marsh, Christie etc that the stories seem to connect with modern readers. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2014 )
- from Zachary Littrell -- VINE VOICE : Witty, dark, anticlimactic mysteries that poke at British politics ( 3.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Instructor Too -- Great Detective Stories, Fun and Enjoyable : G.K. Chesterton was one of Britain's most popular writers and for good reason, he was well versed in the use of the English language, he was full of insights and brilliant reflections on life and people, and he was down to earth and not pedantic. It is obvious that he enjoyed writing as his writing is so enjoyable. Chesterton wrote many series of detective stories likely as his bread and butter work that sold, always telling tales of murder that contain unusual events that happen to unique individuals with interesting backgrounds. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from MR M H NUTT -- Story-telling pure and simple. : This Kindle edition of G.K. Chesterton's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' is a collection of eight stories linked by a central character - the oddly named Horne Fisher - who is a font of all knowledge, which enables him to solve crimes and mysteries in less time than it would take you or I to make a cup of tea. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from PeteRobbo -- A Big Let Down from such an Illustrious Literary Name : I'm really sorry to say that I found this collection from G.K. Chesterton to be very disappointing. I'm sorry to say it because I've found the author to be very readable in other works. I have in mind in particular his biography of George Bernard Shaw, in which Chesterton write as eruditely and entertainingly as the great man himself. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from teavil -- Spectacularly gripping : Decidedly unfashionable hero with unimpeachably sound views. Short stories involving Horne Fisher as the central man who knew too much. Every story's ending was unpredictable, every one was utterly gripping. Did not expect to enjoy this book half so much - not conventional detective short story effort - but I couldn't stop reading these. I now find it inconceivable that Father Brown is so well known - The man who knew too much is superior in every way to the Father Brown stories. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 21, 2018 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Sophie -- ... thought I would give it a try as I like detective novels : I found this version for free on Amazon Kindle and thought I would give it a try as I like detective novels. This is a collection of his novels that revolve around the character of Horne Fisher, the writing style of G.K Chesterton is what kept my attention and kept me hooked on the stories. Horne Fisher isn't a character who is easy to like and get along with as he isn't like the detectives we are now used too. I found that the stories were too short and didn't develop the characters much so that you don't get a sense of who they are and what they are capable of to see if you can solve the mystery yourself. I don't tend to like short detective novels due to the fact you can't get good descriptions of the characters. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2016 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Bugly -- High hopes but... : I know nothing of the author of this book and so review it as read in isolation. The book lacks interest, it works through the scenarios and ends leaving you wondering why you cannot actually enjoy the characters. It fails to give them the depth that a book of this quality should have. Such a shame I wanted to enjoy but it is a bit like playing Cluedo on your own, nothing surprises you it is just working through the motions. I do not regret reading it but would not tell others to do so. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 30, 2015 )
